Doctoral Student;
Department of Philosophy, Western University

Sara is a PhD student in the Department of Philosophy at Western University. She received her BSS in Philosophy and her BSc in Physics, minoring in Astronomy, at the Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, Colombia. Her research focuses on topics at the intersection of Philosophy of Science, Social Philosophy and Epistemology. She is particularly interested in issues surrounding scientific communities and the values and biases in scientific tests and scientific communication, especially on topics related with simulations and climate change. Sara also has a passion for teaching science and philosophy.

My project intends to explore how the use of models of climate change patterns has transformed the way uncertainty is perceived and used in science, what is its role in measurements and how should we also account for the connections between science and social values in cases in which possible elimination of humanity is at stake. Furthermore, I would like to explore in which sense are these prediction measurements and how they contribute to the development of pedagogical tools that improve our relationship with the environment. Because of this, the general questions I am interested in usually lie in the intersection between communities (scientific and not scientific) and how they perceive science. If science is affected by society, how is it that we construct science differently? What does it mean to have an inter-subjective vision of science when we are discussing global topics like climate change? How do we explain the scientific narratives that shape society and how does society shape those scientific narratives while using data and simulations?
