Abstract: I present case studies of “shape-shifting nouns” in the history of dynamic climatology and identify some overarching trends of possible relevance to current and ongoing discussions. What can we know about the history of climate science and how do we know it? If epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief, where does the history of natural knowledge fit in? Whose knowledge counts? Of what? When?
