FRANCISCO MENDINA

Doctoral Student;
Health Information Science, FIMS, Western University

Francisco Mendina Callero is a doctoral student in the Health Information Science program at Western University and a Graduate Student Fellow with the Global Health Solidarity Network. Under the supervision of Dr. Elysee Nouvet, Francisco’s research examines how humanitarian healthcare professionals conceptualize and practice solidarity in complex crises. With a focus on the implications of solidarity for worker and mission safety, access to populations, and operational effectiveness, his work contributes to ongoing debates about the role of neutrality and solidarity in humanitarian healthcare. Prior to their doctoral studies, Francisco earned an HBSc in Life Sciences from McMaster University and an MMASc in Global Health Systems from Western University. He also has worked as an HIV/AIDS Program Coordinator in Ontario’s York Region, where they oversaw case management, community workshops, and promoted HIV self-testing.

Francisco’s research explores how solidarity is understood and practiced across different global health contexts. Their doctoral work examines how humanitarian healthcare professionals engage with solidarity in complex emergency settings, employing qualitative methodologies such as institutional ethnography and semi-structured interviews. As a Graduate Student Fellow with the Global Health Solidarity Network, they contribute to research on solidarity practices in diverse regions, including Latin America and Francophone Africa. Currently, they are conducting interviews on perceptions of solidarity in Latin America and leading a literature review on solidarity practices in Francophone Africa. Their work seeks to advance understanding of solidarity’s role in humanitarian decision-making, healthcare ethics, and global health policy.
