SUMMARY:Winter & Spring 2019 Rotman Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DESCRIPTION\n\nRotman Dialogues are events based on a specific book or reading\, that are facilitated by Institute graduate students. Conducted much as an author-meets-critics event\, these informal discussions begin with a brief introduction by the author\, followed by questions from the one or two graduate students chairing the session. Finally\, the dialogue is opened up to everyone in attendance. \nThe Rotman Dialogues planned for this term are listed below. Some events will be held in conjunction with graduate seminars\, and some will be offered by speakers taking part in the annual Rotman Speakers Series. Full details will be emailed to all Rotman members prior to each event. \nFor individuals interested in participating who are not currently members of the Institute\, please email Deborah Fox for further information. \nMarch 14\, 2019 - Anjan Chakravartty & Stathis Psillos\nReading: Scientific Ontology: Integrating Naturalized Metaphysics and Voluntarist Epistemology\, Oxford University Press (2017) \nCommentator: Stathis Psillos \nTime: 9:30 – 11:00 am \nLocation: WIRB 7107 \nView Event Video (a playlist of highlights\, in fours short videos) \nMarch 27\, 2019 - Lisa Feldman Barrett\nReading: How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain \nCommentators: Aubrie Schettler & Lindsay Gabel \nTime: 3:30 – 5:00 pm \nLocation: WIRB 4190 \nApril 4\, 2019 - Emily Thomas\nReading: Absolute Time: Rifts in Early Modern British Metaphysics\, Oxford University Press (2018) \nCommentator: Alastair Crosby \nTime: 9:30 – 11:00 am \nLocation: WIRB 7107 \nApril 8\, 2019 - Nico Orlandi\nReading: The Innocent Eye: Why Vision Is Not a Cognitive Process\, Oxford University Press (2014)\, chapters 2 & 3 \nCommentator(s): Ron Chunn & Andrew Tweedle \nTime: 11:30 am – 1:30 pm \nLocation: StvH 1145 \nThis event will be held during the graduate seminar\, ‘Issues in Philosophy\, Psychology\, & Neuroscience’ (Anderson).  \nImage credit: Olga Strachna – Arizona | Lower Antelope Canyon (reversed) license

SUMMARY:Stathis Psillos: From natures to laws of nature
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nThe key claim of this talk will be that the conception of nature as being governed by natural laws is thoroughly modern. It arose mostly in the natural philosophy of Rene Descartes and was meant to replace natural powers as principles of change and of connection among distinct existences. This new conception of laws of nature required the re-constitution the concept of natural law. According to the late Medieaval tradition\, exemplified in the writings of Francisco Suarez\, laws require rational agency: a law is something that has to be obeyed (executed) and this can only be satisfied by rational creatures. Given the fact that there is natural necessity\, based on the interaction of powers\, talk of laws governing the behavior natural bodies was\, at best\, metaphorical and its proper content concerned natural necessities which were grounded in the natural inclinations of things imparted on them by the Author of nature. It will be argued that this conception of power-based natural necessity was replaced by a law-based conception of natural necessity in the work of Descartes. The Cartesian conception of laws as ‘particular and secondary causes’ of worldly phenomena will be analysed and explored. \nSPEAKER PROFILE\n\nStathis Psillos is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Metaphysics at the University of Athens\, Greece and a member of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario (where he held the Rotman Canada Research Chair in Philosophy of Science between 2013 and 2015). He is the author or editor of seven books and of more than 140 papers and reviews in learned journals and edited collections\, mainly on scientific realism\, causation\, explanation and the history of philosophy of science. He is member of the Academy of Europe and of the International Academy of Philosophy of Science. He is a former president of the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) and former editor of Metascience (2009-2014). \n \nEVENT VIDEO\n\n \nEVENT POSTER\n\nDownload a copy of the event poster. \nImage credit: Fr Lawrence Lew\, O.P.\, David and Goliath stained glass from St Cuthbert’s church in Edinburgh. SUMMARY:Stathis Psillos: Engaging Philosophy: Einstein on the Method of Science
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nAlbert Einstein said that scientists are poor philosophers. Yet\, he added that especially in periods of scientific revolutions\, scientists should engage in philosophy and should not “surrender to philosophers the critical contemplation of the theoretical foundations” of science. In this talk I will aim to critically examine Einstein’s views on the method of science by placing them within the context of his own historical narrative concerning the crisis of science in the beginning of the twentieth century and the emergence of his theories of relativity. I will stress that his key philosophical endeavour was to clarify the relation between theory and experience. \nSPEAKER PROFILE\n\n \nStathis Psillos received his PhD in Philosophy of Science in 1994 from King’s College London. Between 1993 and 1998 he was initially assistant editor and subsequently deputy editor of the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. Between 1995 and 1998\, he was a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow\, at the Dept of Philosophy\, Logic and Scientific Method\, London School of Economics. Since 1998\, he has been a Research Associate of the Centre for the Philosophy of the Natural and Social Sciences\, London School of Economics. He joined the Dept of Philosophy and History of Science in the University of Athens\, Greece\, in 1999. He was among the founders of European Philosophy of Science Association and served as its first elected President (2007-2009). He is currently the editor of the journal Metascience. In 2008 he was elected member of l’Academie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS). In 2007\, he was co-chair of the Programme Committee for the Philosophy of Science for the World Congress of Philosophy\, which took place in Seoul\, South Korea\, in July 2008. In 2011\, he organised the 3nd congress of the European Philosophy of Science Association\, in Athens. In July 2011\, he was the Springer Lecturer\, at the 11th International IHPST Conference\, held at the University of Thessaloniki. In July 2012 he was William Evans Visiting Professor in the University of Otago\, New Zealand. In March-May 2013\, he delivered the Cardinal Mercier Lectures in Philosophy in the Universite Catholique de Louvain\, in Belgium. He is the author and editor of 8 books (two of which have been award-winning) and over 100 papers and reviews in learned journals and edited books\, mainly on scientific realism\, causation\, explanation and the history of philosophy of science. He has delivered more than 120 talks in seminars and conferences around the world. \nRead more about Stathis Psillos. \nEVENT POSTER\n\nDownload a copy of the event poster and flyer. \nEVENT VIDEO\n\n \n \nThis event is co-sponsored with the London Public Library and the Western Department of Philosophy.

SUMMARY:Stathis Psillos: Revisiting the ‘Bankruptcy of Science’ Debate
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nThe ‘bankruptcy of science’ controversy took place in France towards the end of the nineteenth century. It was a heated debate among scientists\, philosophers\, literary critics\, novelists and various public figures that was widely advertised in the press and caught the attention of the wider public on both sides of the Atlantic. It initially concerned the scope and limits of the scientific worldview and the relation between science and religion\, but in later stages (especially when Henri Poincare got involved in it) it was focused on the very idea of objectivity of science and scientific progress. At the same time\, another debate concerning the alleged ‘bankruptcy of atomism’ was taking place among scientists in Europe\, targeting atomism as a scientific worldview as well as a theory about the structure of matter. Various important arguments for and against a realist conception of science were launched in the context of these inter-connected debates (such as the so-called ‘pessimistic induction’) and versions of structural realism were advanced in response to them. Significantly\, the history of science and various forms of invariance were appealed to by participants in order to defend a realist conception of science. \nSPEAKER PROFILE\n\n\nStathis Psillos received his PhD in Philosophy of Science in 1994 from King’s College London.
