CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2019 POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN PHILOSOPHY OF COSMOLOGY

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Cosmology. The Fellowship will provide a new scholar in foundations of physics with a unique opportunity to pursue research in collaboration with physicists and philosophers. For suitable candidates, it may be possible to hold the Fellowship jointly between the Rotman Institute and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is situated in one of Canada’s leading departments of philosophy. It brings together philosophers and scientists to work on problems of social significance. Ongoing research focuses on a variety of philosophical problems arising in contemporary physics, biology, cognitive neuroscience, and medical science.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is also currently inviting applications for  a Postdoctoral Fellowship in areas of research supported by the Institute (including applied ethics, foundations of physics, philosophy of neuroscience, general philosophy of science, and philosophy of biology). Please see further details here.

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION:

The Fellow will be supervised by Chris Smeenk.  He or she will benefit from joining an active group of postdoctoral fellows working at the Institute, as well as interactions with faculty.  Within the philosophy of physics, faculty pursue topics in the foundations of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and history and philosophy of space-time theories, as well as in connections between physical theory and general questions in methodology, epistemology, and metaphysics.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship has a duration of two years.  The initial appointment is for one year, with renewals annually conditional on satisfactory performance. The Fellow will have an office within the Rotman Institute. The stipend is $40,500 CAD. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided a research allowance.

FELLOWSHIP REQUIREMENTS:

Fellows are required to involve themselves fully in the research life of the Institute by conducting research leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and by participating in conferences, research groups, reading groups, and outreach activities.  Fellows typically teach one course per year at the undergraduate level, although fellows will have the option to engage in outreach or the development of educational curricula in place of teaching.

Candidates must have had a PhD in philosophy or physics or related field conferred within five years of the start of the Fellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship, typically July 1, 2019.

Candidates who wish to be considered for a joint fellowship position with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics should indicate this interest in their cover letter.

Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2019, and will continue until the position is filled.
